US Open

Last season’s second major, the US Open, was held at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York in a par-70 course. The event created a huge amount of buzz after what had taken place weeks earlier at the Masters in Augusta. Did Phil Mickelson really take down Ernie Els for his first major? Would he become contend simply to shed his name from the list of best players to never win the big one or would he come out firing, looking to keep his hot streak going with perhaps another major victory? The questions were answered quickly as Mickelson opened the tourney with rounds of 68 and 66 to go into the weekend tied for the lead at 6-under. The greens were incredibly fast and would be the talk of the weekend as the tourney would eventually come down to a duel between Mickelson and Retief Goosen. The tournament was eventually decided in a five-minute span as Goosen made birdie at the 16 th and went to the 17 th tee where he saw Mickelson three putt from eight feet for a double bogey that gave Goosen the two shot lead he would eventually win by. Goosen (4-under) and Mickelson (2-under) were the only two players to finish in the red and Sunday’s scoring average of 78.727 was the highest Sunday average in more than 30 years.

This year’s US Open will take place at Pinehurst Country Club (Pinehurst No. 2) in Pinehurst, North Carolina, from June 16-19. The course hosted the 1999 US Open, won by the late Payne Stewart with a par putt on the 72 nd hole that beat Phil Mickelson by one shot. Mickelson, as well as perennial favorites like Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, and Vijay Singh, have all played the course well and should be among the leaders at the end of the day on Sunday. The par-72 course will measure approximately 7,252 yards and will provide the players all they can handle.
